I suspect chain stretch on my bike - shifting issues are pretty bad right now and my big chainring looks pretty rough IMO. I just degreased and lubed the bike but it may only be worse now. I've put just over 600 miles since I got it a couple months ago and did one prior clean and lube ~100 miles. That seemed to resolve chainsuck I was having, and gunk was the obvious culprit then as it was rather visible. However I've learned since gritty gunk may have developed prematurely again as it's pretty common to over lubricate as new owner. I did feel like the lube I was using had poor control for dispensing from the bottle.
Monthly maintenance doesn't bother me too much (I've heard that much was normal for avid riders to lube drivetrains) but I'd like to not have such issues at the end of that period.
