It was truly a matter of necessity, was car-free and had reached the limits of racks and bags on a rigid 80's mtb and needed something capable of hauling bigger loads, esp other bike stuff. Was working at my LBS at the time, Xtracycle kits had just come out, weren't available in my state yet, so we signed up to become dealers and bought a half dozen Free Radical kits which sold out in about a week, mostly to my friends. Kept tweaking the set up until I got it dialed in, it rides so smoothly now, similar to a station wagon, it handles better with some loaded weight. It's really satisfying to load up a bike with bike frames and parts to build up other bikes.
