>>1517024Depends on how you do it. The Jones act is kind of a poor policy for maintaining U.S. shipbuilding. Shipbuilding suffers from a global oversupply due to many countries subsidizing it as national policy. U.S. shipbuilding doesn't really get subsidies, instead it gets protectionism. This results in a situation where U.S. shipbuilders can't compete globally but also don't have to compete as much domestically. Shipbuilding in the U.S. has pretty much devolved in to a total focus on its captive market. Because of the lack of foreign competition it hasn't had to adopt modern shipbuilding techniques which results in higher costs and worse ships. Replacing the Jones act with shipbuilding subsidies would probably be a much better solution for nearly everyone.
