Their purpose is so that other vehicles (like semis) can avoid hitting YOU. By this logic bicycles need MORE visibility then other less vulnerable road users. Bicycles are moving slower but from the traffics perspective they're moving faster than anything else out there, backwards! It's not just about your safety either; it places a burden on them when they have less time to react and must maneuver more abruptly to avoid you. It can still be a tragedy if they loose control of all those tons of well-lit steel, even if your shadowy self makes it out okay. More light = more time = more and better decisions for both of you. Public roads are a shared system, all users big and small need to work together with common standards for it to work properly.
