High density means you can walk to a local transit stop and wait for the train with a dozen other people who are all heading into center of the city for various reasons. You'll get off at a crowded downtown station where you'll pick up the intercity rail with lots of other people who are also going to the same city. When you arrive at the next city over, you ride transit to a stop about a mile walk from your girlfriend's home.
Low density means you're out in a small town and your girlfriend is in another small town and there are no transit stops in walking distance of either house. The road network lets you avoid going anywhere near the traffic of a major city so you can drive directly to your girlfriend's house. Even if the rail connecting the two cities is Lightning Fast, it's not going to be worth driving all the way Your City, waiting to catch the train to Her City where she has to pick you up and drive you all the way to her house in the small town, when you could just drive directly to her house in half the time.
