This was a curiosity even in those times, mostly these "freight trams", as pic related, made the work. This part of the Budapest tram system was a part of the so-called "right bank ring", where two railway lines were connected trough tram and suburban railway lines. Therefore it was built to be completely compatible with railway.
There was a huge machine factory called Ganz that was served through these tram rails until 1996, when freight transportation was effectively banned on the BKV's lines, so both on tram and suburban railway lines.
