Hobart had a combined tram and trolleybus operation between 1935 and 1960, when the trams were taken out.
Trams had been installed in 1893, and were the first complete electric tramway system in the Southern Hemisphere. Also the only place in Australia where double deck trams ran.
The trolleybuses were installed due to the short routes and ease. They were nicknamed the "Whispering Death" because of their quiet driving.
Buses replaced most of the trams, and the trolleybuses went on until 1968.
Pretty sad considering the city is now trying to come up with rapid transit...
