Just bought a rigid steel framed 1990's mtb™ as is often recommended on here, with full XT groupset (it always says get DX or XT) and Tange Prestige tubing (another /n/ dictat) and I have to say it's the best bike I ever rode. By far!
I was riding an aluminium hybrid and so yeah, it was a little bit lighter, but the difference in weight is less than a KG, but everything you guys say about the feel of a steel frame is true, it's very hard to put into words but the point is you can feel the ground through the bike but not in a bad way, it's got a softness to it, whereas in comparison the aluminum bike felt strangely dead. I also like the geometry, once I adjusted the fit it's so comfortable to ride, not 100% sold on the 3x chainset, I liked the ratios better on the hybrid but it's not a deal breaker. The thumbshifters are growing on me, found it a bit cumbersome at first but it's starting to feel a bit more natural now, rim brakes are perhaps not as sharp but they also seem to allow for more control and are sharp enough if i pull hard on the levers.
So yeah, after a week trialing it my hybrid's going on ebay for more than twice what i paid for this old mtb and i won't miss it. Just want to say cheers to the lads who are always pushing the 90's mtb meme, it seems /n/ is always right, can't wait to get a pair of slicks on it.
