They were convicted because they were trying to monopolize the sale and distribution of buses and related equipment, and even the judge said in his closing remarks that he probably would not have arrived at the same conclusion the jury did if it had been a bench trial.
Streetcar use peaked in 1920. By 1930, over 20% of cities with trolleys had converted to buses. Bus technology progressed to the point that buses had become much cheaper to operate than streetcars, and that cannot be ignored. For that reason, cities and operators were already converting their operating to buses years before NCL was formed in 1936.
