Nobody is pretending Surly is a boutique brand.
Design, qc, testing, and support are real things though.
Practically every high end trek, specialized, etc, will be made in the same taiwanese mega factories by Giant or Merida.
It doesn't mean that all bicycles are the same or that brands of bicycles are redundant just because they contract production and have corporate overlords.
