I need a dependable, versatile, do it all 4 season bikepacking bike in Canada and my choice pretty much settled between a Rodeolab Traildonkey 4.0 or a custom steel frame with similar specs made by a famous framebuilder. I intend on using it for daily commuting, 2-3 week long bikepacking here in North America (I never intend on using it outside western countries so the argument of steel becomes less relevant), winter bike (lots of salt here) and singletracks
I never had a carbon bike before and I'm worried about it's overall durability for the next 10-15 years. I know they are strong but can also shatter if they get a hit the wrong way. Plus, what about UV damage? If the paint is in good shape, will UV rays still damage the epoxy resin under it? And what about galvanic corrosion of aluminium parts of the bike, like let's say the threaded BB, will it damage the bike? The good thing about rodeolabs is their lifetime warranty but then again with carbon bikes, I fear of just being stranded in the middle of nowhere
With the steel bike I feel more secure but the guy offers a 5 year warranty and he's not too keen on doing a steel fork, he says carbon forks today are way better but then again I would be back to my point about carbon bikes about durability of carbon components
Can anyone enlighten me? What would be fit my needs?
