re: wive's bikes, my wife wanted a cruiser, too, but i was able to convince her that the versatility of a hybrid mtb would be helpful once she got more confident on it to take it off sidewalks and onto fireroads. it's worked out well. i wish you luck.
re: kids, my brother-in-law gave me the weego kangaroo his kid outgrew, pic related, and my 1 year old loves it. it's cool because i can see her and hear her, and she can see where we're going and what's ahead. specific brand/model is unimportant, but a front frame seat is the way to go, imo.
