Randonneurs are quite popular for commuting here in Germany and there are many different brands Stellung them:
KTM X-Strada LFC
Cube Nuroad Race FE
Stevens Supreme Pro
Rose Alroad AL Randonneur
Focus Atlas 6.7 EQP
VSF Randonneur Lite (See pic)
They have a more relaxed geometry compared to racing bikes, are equipped with fenders and front hub dynos, StVZO-legal. I commute daily with the VSF with a rear rack mounted laptop bag.
I just cannot understand people commuting on racing bikes and back packs. However I only see them in the big cities like Berlin or Munich. Seems to be more an ego thing maybe. What I have seen in London was angry road bikers doing races from traffic light to traffic light. If you are into that, commute on a racing bike. If you want to feel comfortable after 4 hours on a tour into back roads and forest roads, look for a randonneur style bike.
