It's simple, every few blocks (lengthwise), an arterial road should run. On this road would be commercial businesses, as well as bus stops (or altermatively, a tram line). That way, it's a short walk for non-car commuters, AND those who refuse to use public transit don't have to spend as much on gas!
The retarded way of laying out suburban streets that started with Levittown is one of the most kiked things about American cities.
