Anyone have experience with old suntour indexed shifting? On my '91 Trek 750 Multi-track, I've got a rear "Suntour XCE" derailleur paired with a 7-speed "Suntour x-press accushift plus".
I understand that suntour indexing doesn't have even pulls between each click and is incompatible with shimano stuff, which is why I left the old shifters on (THAT took awhile to figure out). However, even with them on I can't seem to make the damn thing work. The main problem is the return shifting, it won't click out of the largest cog without a secondary click, which then pushes it two cogs down. And overall it seems really finicky. I can't balance the tension, when I index I end up loosing the cable so much so that going from 7 to 6 is no longer crisp.
On top of all that, I noticed that the derailleur can be "pushed" 1mm either way and it will stay, almost like its gummed up. For example, when I try to shift from 1 to 2 and it won't make it, I can push the derailleur towards 2 and it'll shift and not have any rubbing.
Appreciate anyone with the patience for the long post. I'm considering just buying a new 7speed freewheel and using spare gripshifters I got lying around. But before I do that I need to know if I can use the XCE derailleur.
Pic related, my exact same derailleur
