in the last 20 years, mtb improved drastically, brake, suspension, and most importantly, wheels, tires and one to rule them all, the dark science noone can predict - GEOMETRY.

this meme is very good, modern mtb geometry really has advanced, but the whole long low slack went a bit too far, front end has too little weight on it and you depend on expensive for and fine andjustment in order to avoid OTB via rebound. Bikes are more stable - you get stability while compromising agility, but they are too long and not that fun more my liking, 2010 mtbs felt just low and just slack and just long enough.

short chainstays are anything but stable.

DH bikes and all modern mtb use short chainstays for the same reason as road bikes - agility and acceleration. Stability of a DH bikes comes from the huuuuge top tube (and high trail since slack HA) and you shorten the reach with a short stem. With road bike you dont want stable handling but fast and responsive since higher speeds and you ride "through" the road not "over it" like in mtb.
