The last diagram with the 9-36 cassette shows that its hard to reach the range and small jump sizes between gear ratios with a 1x in comparison to a two or triple setup (talking about the lower end here). And Ekar doesn't seem to be even released yet so we're comparing technology from the early 2000s with the future of 1x right now.There you go. Ekar 10-44 with 38 and 42 chainrings and as a base, my own road setup ( 46/30 + 12/28 ). The thing is - you are not going to get both dense gear selection and range on a 1x until we get to 1x15 or so. But the tradeoff is that at 1x13 you can get both dense top end - where it truly matters, because aerodynamics is going to give you trouble with its velocity-squared drag, and sufficiently low end ( even on 10-44 you get a gear every 2-ish km/h ). We are getting there.
