He claims he didn't have to spread it for the install, but to get it off we had to open it far enough that the clamp was slightly sprung (bolt didn't quite line up with the hole, unless you persuaded it).
In the Nitto catalog/website, there are two quill stem fitment notes. 1st says "hard to assemble, even with a stem wrench", 2nd is "cannot be assembled". This combination was a #2.
