Mass transit requires you to spend time trapped with a bunch of randos, standing or sitting in a shitty uncomfortable seat, all while waiting to finally get to your stop which probably isn't exactly where you were wanting to go in the first place. Need to go somewhere not served by the network? Too bad.
Countries well suited to public transit are ones with very high population densities and where almost everyone abides by a cultural expectation to behave themselves. In places where this isn't the case, a car will almost always be preferable if you can afford one.
