MILW's biggest problem was the unprofitable Midwestern branch lines, if the company had just focused its attention on the Seattle-Chicago bridge traffic and cut out the fat elsewhere it would have continued turning a profit through the 1970s and 1980s, especially as container traffic from East Asia continued increasing in volume and importance.
