The problem is many of the streets the streetcars run on are too narrow to allow that.

Another solution for King Street which has the busiest street car is to close a stretch of the road off for cars and make it a pedestrian and transit way. The idea would permit more sidewalk patios because the road could be narrowed because no need for parking, and more frequent street car service without getting stuck in vehicular traffic. I think this is a good idea but our city council makes transit decisions at glacial pace so we won't know this for a while.
