The 737 -100 and -200 flew in era where both safety technology was not there and air travel was far more dangerous
The 737 -300 / -400 / -500 (classic series) which predates the majority of the A320 family by a decade is worse but reasonably so given when they started flying
The 737 -600/ -700/ -800/ -900 (next gen series) are on average the same age and very slightly perform better than the A320 family.
