$2000 is not an expensive bike. It's a completely reasonable minimum to set if you take cycling remotely seriously
Of course, mountain biking isn't cycling. It's riding down the hill and then taking the ski lift back up again, or riding around on a paved MUP in baggy shorts and your big knobby tires because you're too insecure to shave your legs and wear lycra.
