Fewer doors=more seats. What’s the point of doors you don’t need or double enders if you don’t need them, which also take up more seats. Most New York City streetcars were double ended as the crowded city had mostly stub end terminals, but Brooklyn got 100 PCCs and ran them on lines with loops. The design was flexible if you wanted more doors, like those monster Chicago cars, and as others have mentioned there were double ended PCCs.
