MILW was noteworthy for a lot of traits, perhaps most important being it was the first major US railroad to institute streamlined passenger service out of Chicago.
The sad fact is MILW died because of greed and crookedness, and while the super-merger that created Burlington Northern caused many waves, BN, even being stiff competition, didn't kill Milwaukee. Its own leadership did through incompetence, laziness and monetary schemes.
I really fuckin wish it had survived. Seems like if a few things had gone differently, it probably would have. Many US roads were looking at MILW to be the backbone of a competition conglomerate against BN, and the inept leadership refused it at every opportunity.
