The chain was reasonably quiet because the dirt and grime was on the outside of the chain, not on the inside.
You've pretty much ruined your chain. Throw it away an buy a new one. DO NOT attempt to lube the new chain, it already has appropriate lube on it.
Also throw away your shitty water-based 'degreaser', it's garbage and doesn't work worth shit anyway; dish soap does a better job. Get a non-water-based degreaser/solvent, the kind that evaporates completely, that is the ONLY kind of actual 'degreaser' you should use on a drive chain. Also get a non-water-based chain lube. I recommend pic related for both, I've used them for years and they're excellent.
