I highly recommend either a Cannondale Slate or a Specialized Diverge. The most important thing when commuting is comfort, both these bikes have light weight suspension mechanisms, road bike bars for muh aero, disc brakes, and capability to use bigger wider tires. Models around your price range will be light as well. So go to a LBS and test drive both.

Later down the road, you'll want to throw an electric mid drive kit on either and you'll essentially have a street legal electric motorcycle. Just make sure to lock it up in hidden places or don't stray far from it.
