Taiwan was set to buy the Eurotrain, basically TGV Duplex carriages with ICE 2 power cars. Then they switched to Shinkansen last minute.
Siemens, GEC and Alstom took the Taiwanese to court and they got damages for the contract they cancelled at last minute.
Legacy of it though, is that Taiwan's HSR was run by French TGV and German ICE train drivers for several years while Taiwan was still training its own drivers. Not only that, but the catenary, signalling, track construction and operation rules were done by German and French contractors using European train rules, not Japanese.
The result?
Japanese trains run in a European methodology.
