When the passenger trains were failing, the US had 150 million people spread out largely in suburban and rural areas, with literally trillions of dollars going to making the largest highway system ever created in world history. They were profitable when we had a fraction of the urban population we do today, and they will be again. FEC's Brightline is proof of this.
