I do not believe a rigid Plus size bike, or fat tire is ever smoother or faster than Full suspensions. Hardtails have their limit. As do cyclocross and gravel bikes. I would say 2.6-2.8" is about as wide as you can go before the extra grip becomes a trade off for speed.
There's a trail near me that has a solid 15+ minutes of downhill and my hardtail 29er with 2.3" tires wears me out to the point where my knees start shaking and I have to take a break or really go slow. A fat bike wouldn't make it any better, in this case F.S. is the way to go. /n/ seems to fap over being Underbiked but I do not like beating up my ankles, knees, and lower back.
