Throughout BR service, the Duke was regarded as a crap performer and was relegated to a standby locomotive on the (easy) Birkenhead-Holyhead route.
Most locomotive drivers miraculously found that their locomotive wasn't so faulty after they heard that the Duke was in reserve
This all changed after restoration from the scrapyard, as the draughting (air intake and chimney) were enlarged to be more suited for an engine of this size.
It soon proved to be a stellar performer and is one of the most efficient steam locomotives in the UK
