looks like it's a common theme that folded chainrings are accompanied by chainring bolt failure probably due to improper torque applied to the bolts during installation. using a steel chainring only for this reason seems like an utter fail, steel chainrings are much heavier and you should be able to avoid folding an aluminium chainring by installing it correctly and not crashing. impacts might be common when mountain biking but then you should be prepared to replace parts regardless.
