http://www.tramz.com. They have a lot of old photos and system maps of places you probably never even heard of, it's a massive timesink for me.
I think the reasons these turn of the century systems didn't survive are very similar to the US. In addition many south american cities had their biggest growth in the time from 1950-1990, and trams and trolleys were super unfashionable back then.
