An example of this is the Q2. Instead of making a 2-10-4, or asking Baldwin to make them a decent set of frames for an outstanding 4-6-6-4 articulated, they slapped all of this together on a single rigid frame. It was the most powerful steam locomotive ever tested, and got even higher hp on test than the Allegheny.
This could've been an incredible design, but was hamstrung by the very long wheelbase and the inherent difficulty of balancing a duplex drive.
