Its principally at grade, the only metro element would be the Loop that circles the city centre
Regional trains to country Victoria and fast Inter-Urbans to the the major towns too
Its a solid network that at first glance looks great
But then you ride it and you see just how neglected for decades it has become as the department of transportation and politicans have focused on roads for decades
Then in the 2000s as patronage shot up it couldn't cope with it - old signals old switches broken jointed tracks on broken wooden sleepers
And summer heat waves traditionally shut it down as tracks buckle, overhead sags, and trains breakdown
Melbournes grown a lot since the network was built, the last commuter line was built in 1920 and since then there has only ever been extensions of electrification and rebuilding narrow to broad gauge and shutting down spur lines, but they go without and politicians plan more road projects
