1 - they don't want to spend a lot on it
2 - they are scared of thin (actually normal sized), smooth tires because it looks specialized and professional
But most importantly :
3 - they want the bike to be able to go pretty much everywhere, it's very reassuring to them. They never used a non-shitty bike so they don't realize how bad the pedaling efficiency is on this things. They don't believe some bikes have a better efficiency than others.
