Modern cars, are in a way, based off the box shaped, square horse carriage, and since manufacturers and fossil are in bed with each other, they don't change it. No matter how much they give it rounded edges, or make it look cool, as long as the back of cars are essentially flat, MPG will be shit. Essentially, modern cars are not shaped for highway speeds, but for speeds sub 30 mph. Above those speeds, all resistance to overcome is over 80% air.
300 MPG is not far fetched for a properly designed car. The Aptera was 300 MPG.
But efficiency is completely not the priority of the people who sell fuel.
