since the 90's the hutongs in the city center have been destroyed and the resident evicted further and further away to make place for malls that no one use and high rise with a ridiculously high rent so the land value skyrocket. given time they will build the subway lines and make it more livable but for now they need to cram more low income peoples from hutongs to make place for mr li new shiny mall.
