NER ES-1. One of the first uses of an electric locomotive in the UK. They were used as shunters/transfer locomotives between a high and low level yard in Tyneside.
The route between them was tunnelled, steep and curved, making conditions on the footplate of steam engines outright dangerous.
So they commissioned 2 of these from GE/BTH in 1905 and they worked until 1964. They used 3rd rail in the tunnels for clearance and OHL/pantographs in the yards to protect the yard workers.
