>>1497277Yeah I have a '93 Pinarello Gavia with 12sp Super Record, built from a NOS frameset that I found a few months ago. It's awesome. Modern hub spacing made the project pretty easy. But, regardless of whether you go the ~l'eroica~ route or modernize the bike, the project will be a money pit. Besides the time spent researching shit and finding the parts, the cost of acquiring the parts can be nuts, especially if you're trying to do something special. If you get really lucky you can find a NOS/VG complete groupset on fleabay or some local store. But no matter what you need to be prepared to exceed whatever budget you have for the build or you'll end up with an eternal project or a shitty frankenbike.
One problem is the lack of availability of new 5-arm 11sp chainsets in polished silver, if you want to try and avoid looking anachronistic. I think the clover chainsets (SunXCD, VO, Rene Herse) look goofy unless they're on foofy Singer-style rando rigs, while the Sugino XO looks kinda chonky. Grant's entire "SILVER" line of stuff is probably garbage, judging by the piss poor quality of the friction shifters. The best is Campy Athena, but only if you can find it in UltraTorque flavor. The PowerTorque version is to be avoided.
Another route is to build the frame with 9sp era stuff. Then you get many of the modern conveniences but with more classic looks and (for better or worse) ergonomics. You don't get modern gearing options, but otherwise it's nice. One of my bikes has a Shimergo build and it works well.
Yet another route is to look at companies like SunXCD, Dia Compe, Tektro, Microshift, and others who are making parts that have retro look and function, but are new. That way you don't have to deal with actual old shit.
