>>1900915I like you. Please stay around and continue to post.
>>1900923The requirements for entry at OS/WIP are minimal. Know how to fill out some basic government forms to get your TWIC/MMC, spam your resume to tug companies or join SIU to go deep sea. It isnt hard.
>>1900928You said you work tugs, which is what ive done for my whole career. Tugs are great but you really cant hawsepipe your way from tugs to deep sea because the STCW req's for OICNW/OICEW require you to do a lot of shit under the supervision of a designated assessor which MAY happen for OICNW but WONT happen for OICEW since tug engineers are going to be sailing solo. It sucks but thats how its written. I literally sat down with the guy in charge of a major west coast REC and we wnet over the regs and he was shocked, though there is an out in the form of one line at the end of the CRF that says something like "USCG can choose to waive all the above whenever we want under whatever circumstance we want", meaning if you sea-lawyer good enough you might be able to convince them that sailing for a decade on ocean tugs solo Chief means you dont need to take $30,000 in STCW votech training classes to get OICEW cert. Maybe.
>>1900937I'm an ocean/coastal/harbor tug Chief. I really only use basic math to calculate fuel burn or equipment run time hours. The tests ive had to take along the way have a lot of math but its very specific formulas, you either memorize the formular or memorize the question answers. Those actual formulas never become relevant in the work environment, though the principles behind them are important to understand on a theoretical level, IE: why does a generator run at 1800RPM? because it has 2 poles on the rotor and 1800 rotations per min is required to make 60 cycles per second (60hz freq voltage)
If youre considering this career i strongly advise you to read the sticky, read the thread, ask educated questions and be humble. Its a good life, if you can make it.
