I had a rather eye opening experience today:
I borrowed a 26" triathlon bike from a friend to do the same ride I did before with my modern drop bar bike for comparison sake.
The triathlon bike was rather old and had a non aero diamond frame of aluminum and non aero rims.
I was at least 3km/h faster on the flats, despite beeing sore from my previous ride and despite having normal non clipless pedals. The gain from going aerobars and 26" is incredible.
People dropping thousands on 28" UCI style drop bar bikes seems so silly now.
On the downside, the handling of this bike was between terrible and scary and it sucked for climbing.
