- 3 speed only makes sense if you are repurposing an old sturney / archer IGH on a super cheap build
- IF you have a grand you should be able find a good used aluminium framed roadbike with 8 speed sora STI shifters for half that. That will get you 90% the way to a real fred sled. something like this [pictured]
