if they now squeek, "toe in" the pads slightly so the most forward edge hits the rim first--we're talking millimeters, here.

There are slots molded into the pad surface that indicate the wear limit i.e. when they're worn out no more slots can be seen, they're smooth. If you see any metal poking thru the pad surface, your pads are blown and it's scraping your rim. If you upgrade, Kool Stop salmon compound are the standard rec, good and cheap.
