In the old days, the trains used to be connected to a steel cable, which would move according to a timetable, meaning that the trains were driverless, but they still featured a guy who would close the doors before moving off.
The massive rebuild of the subways instead electrified the subway and enabled the trains to be self-propelled. Future plans are to make the Subway completely automated without any drivers, but with station staff pressing a button to close the doors.
