In most of the US if you're seeing lycra cyclists only, it's because you're on an country road between cities meaning long-distance (athletic) cyclers are the only ones ever bothering to ride out that far. There might actually be local bicycle traffic between rural homes along the road, but odds of you ever seeing it low due to the sparse population.
