I'd understand this on bus, but on tram it is just a meme, since it doesn't travel outside rails (except Russia). It would add up to cost. Compare gigawatt-hours of li-ion batteries to some shy n-km of 100 mm^2 copper (or even aluminium in low-traffic areas) cable and couple transformers.

I think it is easier to differentiate by voltage supplied and weight.
Tram is 550-750 VDC, under 1.5 tons/meter.
Metro is 550-1500V, under 2 tons/meter.
Train is 1500-25000V, under 2.5 tons/meter.
