I live in a US city that grew up before cars were everywhere. When I first moved here, I was shocked at the number of people walking around (to work, to the store, etc).
It's quite common to have 10ft sidewalks, no front yard. There's usually a small back yard, accessed from the alley, or through a passage. Sometimes it's to the side, but sometimes it's kind of like a tunnel, straight through the house.
Of course, some neighborhoods have giant apartment buildings, others are more detached, etc. This feels about right though.
