Old school or new school components should be mostly personal preference, I do really enjoy working with old shimano parts, but obviously modern bits have an advantage in performance and being a bit easier to work on.
1x vs triple is also a real big meme discussion imo. It's nice not having to worry about a front derailleur or chainrings, but you'll lose gears and you'll want a rear derailleur with a clutch and/or a narrow-wide chainring to prevent dropping your chain.
But it should be a good time for you, friend. Hope you get some good rides out of that bike, and learn enough about fixing bikes to get you hooked.
