OP, I don't want to suggest that city's planning is good, but it's also not as bad as your pathfinding in that example suggests. There's a creek and a railroad line that are complicating the route here - if you were a pedestrian and willing to use unofficial paths you could make this particular walk quite a bit shorter. Also, that's a silly walk since there's a lot of restaurants due east of that area with the motels that's your starting point.
